On December 31, 2000, Legal Services of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Inc., Lehigh Valley Legal Services, Inc., Susquehanna Legal Services, and Northern Pennsylvania Legal Services, Inc. formed North Penn Legal Services. Northern PA Legal Services was incorporated on August 19, 1964, the same month in which President Lyndon Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act (the “war on poverty”) which included Head Start, VISTA, Job Corp, Foster Grandparents, Upward Bound, community mental health centers, community action programs and legal services for the poor. Over the next nine years legal services programs were funded to serve all 20 counties.
Although grounded in local communities, the vision for NPLS is regional. We are committed to providing equal access to justice throughout 20 counties in Northeast Pennsylvania regardless of a client's location, language, or disability. Today, we operate with a staff of 80, including 29 attorneys and 18 paralegals.
