As guidelines change during the COVID-19 crisis, please check back often for updates and new resources.

I am an independent contractor and cannot work due to the COVID-19 crisis. Can I get UC?

If you have lost your job, lost your business, had your hours reduced, or been unable to work due to the COVID-19 crisis: YOU SHOULD APPLY FOR PANDEMIC UNEMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE.

In response to COVID-19, a new unemployment benefit program, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), is available to workers who are not eligible for regular Pennsylvania Unemployment Compensation (UC) such as independent contractors or “gig” workers. If you have lost your job, lost your business, had your hours reduced, or been unable to work due to the Covid19 crisis:

  • The PUA Application will be available online at www.uc.pa.gov by the last week of April.
  • Do NOT Apply for Regular Unemployment Compensation.
  • PUA will provide 39 weeks of: Weekly PUA benefits ranging from $195 to $572 and an additional $600 per week from April through July.

I am receiving regular UC benefits, am I eligible for any additional UC?

All Pennsylvanians receiving unemployment compensation (UC) benefits will also begin to receive Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (PUC), a $600 per week supplemental benefit payable through the end of July.

Everyone receiving UC benefits or PUA benefits in ANY amount will also receive a supplemental payment of $600 per week, from the week ending April 4, 2020 through the week ending July 25, 2020. People receiving all 17 weeks of these PUC payments will gross an additional $ 10,200. These payments will be made automatically, without a separate application.

How do I apply for UC?

The fastest way to apply is online at www.pa.us.gov, but you can also call 1-888-313-7284. Given the current volume of calls, you should apply online.

Should I apply for Unemployment Compensation if I don't  know if I will be eligible for benefits?

You should apply for Unemployment Compensation even if you are unsure. However, you need to be financially eligible and you have to be unemployed through no fault of your own.
