The Mayors of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton and the County Executives of Lehigh County and Northampton County have proclaimed April as Fair Housing Awareness Month in honor of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Fair Housing Act of 1968!

Happy Anniversary to the Fair Housing Act, and a special thank you to everyone who works to eliminate housing discrimination.

Full proclamation text below:

The work that legal service organizations do for our clients goes beyond the courtroom. We improve living conditions, increase income, and keep utilities connected. We have a direct impact on the health of the people we help. Medical professionals are our natural allies, since their patients come to them looking for relief from medical conditions that may have social or legal causes.

As we celebrate 50 years of the Fair Housing Act, enacted on April 11, 1968, it’s important to remember that one of the key motivations for this groundbreaking legislation was to fight against discriminatory lending practices, otherwise known as “redlining.” So we can be grateful that this practice is now just a sad chapter in our history, right? Not so fast…
